Energy storage technique on the move

550 energy professionals from 30 countries discuss on storage of energy from the renewable source

The fifth International Renewable Energy Storage Conference (IRES), hosted by EUROSOLAR and the World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE), began in Berlin on Monday. Over the course of this 3-day event, some 550 experts from Germany and abroad will gather at the Seminaris CampusHotel Science & Conference Center to discuss and debate the technologies, available and in development, for storing energy generated from renewable resources. As in previous years, the event is being held in cooperation with EnergyAgency.NRW, service provider of the State of Nordrhein-Westfalen in all energy matters.

"The energy storage technologies are well developed and poised to provide a solution", said Irm Pontenagel, managing director of EUROSOLAR, at the beginning of the conference. "This meeting will showcase and explore many projects which not only are producible, but also worked out projects and profitable products. Storage systems become increasingly powerful and cheaper. They open up new markets for renewable energies worldwide and accelerate their entry."

This year’s IRES conference themes include the demand for storage in renewable energy supply, economic aspects and operation and business models for stationary storage systems, already accomplished storage solutions and solar photovoltaic energy storage. Speakers come from Germany, France, The Netherlands, Switzerland, China, Japan, United States and other countries.

"Renewable energy storage technologies are standing on the threshold of profitability and their broad roll-out is about to happen", explained Lothar Schneider, managing director of EnergyAgency.NRW. "Although the use of these modern technologies could be an economically viable option already now, many companies lack the courage to invest in this future with promising prospects. An increased demand and the decision to apply the technologies would spur their further development", said Mr Schneider.

In 2006 EUROSOLAR and the World Council for Renewable Energy (WCRE) had launched the first of an international conference series intended to contribute to the developments in energy storage and to publicize their application. Following the success of the 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2009 events, IRES will now take place for the fifth time.
